What's the problem you are having? The Live! has been very well supported for years now (even back in 2008). Does 'alsamixer' see your card? What's the output of 'lsmod | grep snd' ?

The problem is a silent card
Alsamixer still sees „nVidia“ onboard sound

The problem is that Ubuntu is selecting the onboard sound as the default sound card. Your output from aplay -l indicates that Ubuntu does see your SB Live sound card.
Try going to: system > preferences > sound, and see if it gives you the option to use the SB Live.
If it does not, see this thread on using multiple sound cards in Ubuntu:
http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=922860
Or see post #16 in this thread:
http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=1248238
http://ubuntuforums.org/showpost.php...2&postcount=16
Try installing asoundconf-gtk as it says there and follow the instructions of selecting the default sound card (the SB Live) that you want to use.
Hope this helps.

I'd already selected Live! In system > preferences > sound. Installed asoundconf-gtk, no change

Removing Pulse-Audio would have been my next suggestion to troubleshoot this.
Pulse-Audio is a huge resource hog. Also, as you have discovered, it has caused a great deal of problems for many Ubuntu users. Many people, including me, happily live without Pulse-Audio. To remove Pulse-Audio from your system, see this tutorial in post #4 in this thread:
http://ubuntu-ky.ubuntuforums.org/sh....php?p=8284273
Note: All I did to remove Pulse-Audio was the first command listed there:
Code:
sudo apt-get purge pulseaudio gstreamer0.10-pulseaudio
That is enough to disable Pulse-Audio. Then reboot and run gstreamer-properties as it says there and set everything to alsa. With Pulse-Audio gone, your system will use alsa.

Note: After removing Pusle-Audio, you will no longer be able to use the: system > preferences > sound applet. (There is some ppa repo that can add it back for use without Pulse-Audio, but I forget which one it is. I think it is listed in that ongoing thread somewhere.)
Anyway, I just use alsamixer in the terminal to control sound, and I am fine with that. If you want a GUI to control sound, then install the alsamixergui and gnome-alsamixer as per the 3rd and 4th command on that tutorial. Note that much of that other stuff in those commands you may already have.

You will likely see your CPU usage go down when playing music and video without Pulse-Audio. I did. That is why I remove it.
