Create ubuntu .deb from binary .tar.gz (Blender 2.41)

Hi.

I want to create a .deb package for a program (Blender) that is included in the Ubuntu repository. The latest version in the repository is 2.37a, while the latest version on the blender website is 2.41. I downloaded the linux binary tar.gz file from the blender website, but I have no idea how to convert it into a .deb.

Any ideas?

Usually you have to use a program called alien which should be in the ubuntu repos. I've had mixed results using alien. Sometimes it works great. Sometimes not at all.

Blender is 2.41 in Dapper, and that comes out on Thursday.

The Beta for Dapper is actually quite stable, too, so you can use that now.

Otherwise, there's no need to make a .deb. You can just compile it from source with the .tar.gz.
If you feel the need, for some strange reason, to make the .tar.gz into a .deb, try CheckInstall:
