Connecting to VNC server gives me grey screen

I followed the guide on the below link to set up a VNC Server

So now I got my VNC server set up on my Ubuntu. I then test it out and enter my password by typing

vncviewer localhost:1

The X window opens up but all I see is a grey background and a moving "X" mouse cursor with no login screen. How do I get the local login screen to appear for VNC users?
