Smile Computer hung up after install ATI driver on Ubuntu 7.10


Hi everyone, i'm a newbie at linux and i've got a problem with my ubuntu installation descript as follow:
- I've install Ubuntu 7.10 and Windows XP professional on my PC and both ran without problem until i install ATI driver for my 2600XT. Ubuntu tell me to restart and i 've done so , after reboot tmy PC can still boot into XP but qhen i chose to boot into Ubuntu the machine simply hung up (After booting screen with Ounbuntu symbol and right before the login (user/password) screen) the monitor simply go blank, the harddisk still work (HDD led blink periodly, and if i didn't install driver for ATI , the machine work just fine , iwas able to surfing internet and listening to music, ....). Does any one have an idea? Any help is much appreciate.

If your videocard has two outputs and you want dualscreen, be sure to switch on both monitors, if I don't do that, I get the same result. What I find particularly disturbing, is the fact that even switching consoles with ctrl-alt-F1 doesn't wake up the videodriver, and also ctrl-alt-backspace doesn't wake up the videocard (to quit X the hard way). Someone implementing that driver did a good job of screwing things up in my humble opinion.

If you only have one monitor but still two outputs, try to switch the monitor to the other output. Hopefully Windows will find out about it and let you work as you expect. If your card has only one video-output, you have a different problem than I had and I cannot help you further, sorry.
