Unhappy Changed CD-drive make Ubuntu Boot hang

I just installed Ubuntu(became WinXp+Ubuntu7.04) by live cd with terrible experince, due to it require 256mb ram while my computer run on 224m(32m share with on-board vga), I have to borrowed another 512mb or it can't continue- I logged in Ubuntu on harddisk and do not change. Later,I shut down the machine. Here the problem come, I installed a liteonit cd-rw instead of my sony cd-rom. They both perform well on windows. However, I can't see Ubuntu desktop because it hanged at the beginning which the bar moved a little bit. Recovery mode also doesn't work. Anyone know this please help.

Did you check the HCL before you installed the Lite-on drive? Check here for your model to see if it is know to work.

http://www.linuxquestions.org/hcl/showcat.php/cat/340

How about the hardware jumpering and position on the bus? What bus is it on? If it is IDE, is it master or slave? Is it recognized on BIOS as you have it installed? I know you said it works with windoze, but is that as you have it installed right now? Does this thing need SCSI emulation?

In your linux installation, you will have the configuration for the old drive, driver, and /etc/fstab stuff. Also there may something affecting the drive in the boot options.

You need to find out if the hardware is supported, it probably is, you still don't want to guess at that.

Look at the way you have it jumpered, etc. Manufacturers doc helps here.

Answer as much as you can, and post back results; along with the exact model of the drive.

Thanks for your advices.
I agree that source of the issue is configuration.
And I should add those information:
Hardware Model: Liteon-it 52246s,IDE, no results about support issue on google. The jumper is set on slave as last one, and differ from master.
PS: Motherboard Asus P4s800-mx, bios version 1011 (made slow-boot issue of winxp) may affect these too, but the cd-drive are recognized well.
Last night, after post, I restart to windows and used it burned a data-cd successfully.

This is my first experience to GNU/Linux, and post in English in Non-chinese forum as well. Thanks a lot.

The web site for your drive is www.liteonit.com I went there and found the hardware manual in the download section. Just search on the model number in the optical cdrw section.

I didn't see any linux information there. I did a www.google.ca/linux search. Any time you are doing a search for linux related information, add the /linux to google, you will find much more linux related information.

You said the drive is jumpered as slave. Is there another drive on the secondary bus? If not linux may not be detecting it without the master device. ( I know you said it works in windoze ).
If it is the only device on the secondary IDE bus, then try it as master, and see what happens.
