CD/DVD drive not accessible

I am a complete Linux/Ubuntu Noob and researched the issue and came up with nothing. I cannot figure out how to access my CD/DVD drive. Places >> Computer shows nothing and neither do any of the sub components. I don't know enough about the console to try to access the drive from there. Every time a user gets close to a solution (to my knowledge), contributors stop replying and the years roll on. Is there a solution?

I have tried:

Code:
eyesonyou@ubuntu:/dev$ dir cd*
	cdrom cdrw

	eyesonyou@ubuntu:/$ cdrom@
	cdrom@: command not found
	eyesonyou@ubuntu:/$ cdrom@ cdrw@
	cdrom@: command not found

	eyesonyou@ubuntu:/$ ls
bin dev host lost+found opt sbin sys var
boot etc initrd.img media proc selinux tmp vmlinuz
cdrom home lib mnt root srv usr

	eyesonyou@ubuntu:/$ ls cd*

	eyesonyou@ubuntu:/$ cd dev

	eyesonyou@ubuntu:/dev$ ls cd*
	cdrom cdrw

	eyesonyou@ubuntu:/$ ls /dev/cd* /dev/sr*
	/dev/cdrom /dev/cdrw /dev/sr0
Pushed the eject button: The tray opens

Push the tray back in: It spins, spins faster, and then stops.

eyesonyou@ubuntu:/$ sudo eject: The cdrom ejects properly

CD/DVD drive is not fried and does work

Code:
eyesonyou@ubuntu:/$ hwinfo --cd

Hi there,

Welcome to LQ!!!

As I can see you are logged in as regular user. $ prompt denotes that you are logged in as normal user. If you want to perform administrative task you have to use sudo before typing any command.

As I can understand you are trying to access CDROM from command line. You can use the following command for that:

sudo mount cdrom /media

This will mount cdrom contents to /media folder

Once the above is done you can browse the CD by going in /media , use the following command for that:

cd /media

and then do ls

It should display the content list of cdrom.

Also I can see from the output you pasted you were trying to edit/see /etc/fstab and it replied saying bash: /etc/fstab: Permission denied that is because you have to use either vi or vim to edit a file or to see a file you can do sudo cat /etc/fstab.

You should not make any modification to any important system file like /etc/fstab without making a backup and without knowing what you are doing as that might make the system crash/not bootable so be careful while doing that.

I hope this helps.

Thank You

Thank you for the tips, warnings, and facts. I'm trying to access the cdrom either in the OS or console.

Code:
eyesonyou@ubuntu:/$ sudo mount cdrom /media
[sudo] password for eyesonyou:
mount: /cdrom is not a block device

Bingo!! Thanks

Code:
eyesonyou@ubuntu:/$ sudo mount /dev/cdrom /media
mount: block device /dev/sr0 is write-protected, mounting read-only
eyesonyou@ubuntu:/$
eyesonyou@ubuntu:/$ cd /media
eyesonyou@ubuntu:/media$ dir
...and out pops the files!

Then I navigated in the OS to "File System" >> "media" and the files where there too. Case close. Good Job!

A simple question: from which release is your ubuntu (10.04 ... or newer), and is it 32-bit or 64-bit.
I am asking this because I have had this issue with ubuntu 10.04 64-bit version.
It was unpredictable when the cdrom would be available, usually every 4 to 6 reboots ...
Although the computer was brand new I started to suspect my hardware.
But after installing the 32-bit version the problem vanished and has never occured anymore.
And I lived long and happily after!
