Question Can't install java - dependencies problem on multiverse (dapper)

My /etc/apt/sources.list is:
Code:
deb http://www.beerorkid.com/compiz dapper main
deb http://xgl.compiz.info/ dapper main

deb http://il.archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu/ dapper main restricted universe multiverse
deb-src http://il.archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu/ dapper main restricted universe multiverse

deb http://il.archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu/ dapper-updates main restricted universe multiverse
deb-src http://il.archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu/ dapper-updates main restricted universe multiverse

deb http://il.archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu/ dapper-backports main restricted universe multiverse
deb-src http://il.archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu/ dapper-backports main restricted universe multiverse

deb http://security.ubuntu.com/ubuntu dapper-security main restricted
deb-src http://security.ubuntu.com/ubuntu dapper-security main restricted
deb http://security.ubuntu.com/ubuntu dapper-security universe multiverse
deb-src http://security.ubuntu.com/ubuntu dapper-security universe multiverse
When trying to install JAVA plugin to firefox, i got this:
Code:
root@laptopy:~# apt-get install sun-java5-jre
Reading package lists... Done
Building dependency tree... Done
You might want to run `apt-get -f install' to correct these:
The following packages have unmet dependencies:
j2re1.4-mozilla-plugin: Depends: j2re1.4 but it is not going to be installed
sun-java5-jre: Depends: sun-java5-bin (= 1.5.0-06-1) but it is not going to be installed or
ia32-sun-java5-bin (= 1.5.0-06-1) but it is not installable
sun-java5-plugin: Depends: sun-java5-bin (= 1.5.0-06-1) but it is not going to be installed
E: Unmet dependencies. Try 'apt-get -f install' with no packages (or specify a solution).
I've tried with the "-f" flag, but it didn't work either.

Any tips?

Download the source from Sun's website and compile it to a deb. Then install it. http://blog.agileware.net/index.php/...-ubuntu-linux/

i'm aware of those methods, but i think it's best to install from the official repositories. i thought maybe someone else got the same error and found a local solution to it.

it doesn't make a lot of sense that the repositories are not working, so i think it's my fault - bad configurations etc.

thanks anyway for the tips

I'm not sure. With Dapper, it's the first time that Sun Java is in Ubuntu's repositories. Additionally, 1.4.2 is not the current Java version (1.5 is current). - I tend to think there's a bug within the packages in the repositories: When you choose the 1.4.2 Mozilla plugin, the matching 1.4.2 Java Virtual Machine should be marked as selected, automatically.

I also believe there's no actual need for the browser plugin (at least not with Sun Java 1.5), so try to just install the 1.5 JRE.

BTW, Here's a Java version checker for the browser.

At last, pjlvaledez' method should work, at any rate.

Configure your sources like this and you'll get the correct version. Page 12-17 go through the details
