I have two printers and a scanner connected to my system:

printer port - HP Laserjet 1100
USB - Canon Pixma iP5200
USB - Epson Perfection 1650 (not ready to tackle this yet)

When I first open the "Printers - Systems Settings" window and enter Administrator mode, none of the above show, as expected. When I select "Add Printer/Class, teh KDE Print Add Printer Wizard opens. When I select Next - Local Printer - Next, it displays a list of ports and detected "printers". The Lawserjet is always on, the scanner is normally off except when I want to use it, and the Canon is normally off. Under those conditions, all three of the above are shown under "Others" and LPT #1 is shown under "Parallel". The Canon and Epson are shown under paralle port #1, and the Laserjet is shown under hp:/par/HP_Laerjet_1100?device=/dev/parport0.

If I turn the Canon on, everything is the same except teh Canon is now ALSO shown under USB as Canon iP5200 USB#1, and then under that, Canon iP5200.

From here, if I try to continue the wizard for the Laserjet by selecting it and ahving its URI show up as hp:/par/HP_Laerjet_1100?device=/dev/parport0, I get to a point of choosing among a group of drivers. If I select the recommended one, HP Laserjet 1100 (Foomatic + hpijs), then Next, I get an error box that tells me...

Unable to load the requested driver:
Unable to create the Foomatic driver [HP-LaserJet_1100,hpijs]. Either that driver does not exist, or you don't have the required permissions to perform that operation.

The same if I choose any of the others. I am in Administrator mode.

What do I do?

Part 2 - If I go through the same process with teh Canon, it is not listed among the printers. I undertand that it is too new to have a driver, and that Canon is notorious for not providing Linux drivers, so I'll have to look for a third party driver. That will be the subject of another post.

For HPLIP go here and install the latest to make sure it is installed in unsure of that.

HPLIP - my LJ 1100 not supported - amazing...earlier models are, and this was a fairy popular model. Bummer!

Canon iP5200 - the link you gave has iP5000, which one would expect represents the series, however, even at that they say it's not yet incuded in the Foomatic packaes and they recommend the Guten-Print ip4100 driver. I do beliee I tried that one as being the closest, and when I tried to do a test page, nothing happened, so perhaps it's not campatible with my iP5200. Also, in that link, they give some of the specs of the printer, and some of them don't match the iP5200, so itmakes me think that's not the solution. If I can remember the name of the commercial driver for this printer, I may have to buy it...argh!

I know I had this printer working prior to my recent hard drive replacement and re-install of Dapper. I know I tried some third party driver commercial driver (mentioned above) that I don't recall, and gave it up when I found another alternative, but don't recall the details of either. In any case, at this point, I have no supported printer for my Dapper installation.

I do understand that if one is already a Linux convert, then in buying new hardware, he would buy only hardware that's compatible. Unfortunately, for somebody trying to migrate to Linux, the hardware is pre-existing, and if it's not compatible, it's probably back to Windows rather than invest in new, compatible hardware. Ibnthis csae, the ip5200 is less than a year old. It's ery disappointing to not be able to use it in Linux.

As for the scanner, thanks for the lionk. I'm aware of sane, just haven't resolved other less pressing issues yet to get down the priority list to the scanner.

FYI...

Googled and found TurboPrint and now recall that was the commercial driver I mentioned, but still don't recall what I had found that I replaced it with. DLed TurboPrint and will install for now. The free for home use version is crippled, so I doubt if it will suffice for the long term as the blocked features, while not essential, are what one buys a photo printer for - high quality settings, photo paper, etc. If I recall, the price is ~29 euros (don't know the current exchange rate, but I'd guess that would be a little higher in dollars), but that's not really the point.

The better solution is for the whole world to boycott Canon until they provide Linux drivers equivalent to their Windows drivers. Of course, that won't happen. I can't even boycott their OEM cartridges for this printer because to the best of my knowledge, refillers haven't found a way to reset or replace the monitoring chip in the cartridges. That will happen in time, but I'm not sure about the driver. Makes you wonder if there's a lucrative, exclusive arrangement with Microsoft.

I also found at least one forum thread that looked promising, but when I tried chasing the links for drivers, the links were dead. The most promising thread was a year old.

So the HP LaserJet 1100 does not work with the HPIJS driver which is part of the HPLIP driver and gui tool package?

Just wondering since on the HPLIP page it is listed under the (Multi-function) Monochrome (B&W) LaserJet MFPs page. This model supported an add on scanner and is why it is listed under that section.

Brian...as mentioned before, when working through the wizard to add the 1100 printer, I get a list of available drivers, but when I try to add one, it won't let me. I included the error message above.

I did go back out and check the link you gave, and as you point out, the HP 1100 is included on the multifunction printer list. I've downloaded the newest driver and will try to figure out what to do with it. I'll probably be back with questions.
