Unhappy cant get ip address/no internet connect

my xp is connecting;cant get ip address or internet connect on linux.we use broadband modum More info. I use desktop/wired.operating system is ubunto7.4. ip is dynamic.Sorry, idont know what "distro" is.tech. that set this said ip would come up automatically,does not. I am someone who apparently needs step by step instruct.

Please give some more info, have you a laptop or desktop, wireless or wired, what linux distro are you using?
