Cannot update and upgrade my old desktop (14.10)
I have been using my netbook most of the time, but I finally pulled out my desktop (an old Optiplex 755). It had no wifi hardware, and I no longer have adsl. So, I bought and installed the driver for a DLink Wireless AC1200 Dual Band USB Adapter (to get wifi). This works.
So, I am on the internet. It's Ubuntu 14.10. I tried to update it for security updates once I was connected to the internet, but it refused to connect to the repositories. I tried via the Update Manager, Synaptic, and the command line using apt. All failed. I tried changing the sources.list to vivid, but that failed. Then I tried xenial, but that failed. So, I don't know what to do.
So, I added "nameserver 8.8.8.8" to my resolv.conf file, and then I was able to run apt update (I've currently got it set on vivid). Given that 14.10 (utopic) no longer exists, I suppose I should upgrade. I'm hoping that I can go straight to xenial and not have to incrementally go to vivid, then wily, and finally xenial. Guess I'll see.

Hmm. Well, I guess the upgrade issue is solved. But, upgrading to vivid from utopic has caused a new problem. Seems the DLink Wireless USB adapter (DWA-182) no longer works with the newer kernel. Well, it's always something, I guess. Time to start a new thread, I figure.
