bout nvidia i dont know.
have you run dpkg --configure -a ?
if:
Quote:
E: _cache->open() failed, please report
|
. is the following error-message i dont know.
else: if it wont correct the error on its own, try removing and reinstalling the package which gives you trouble. if it hasnt been completely removed, re-install it and remove it again.
to make it short: shmash with a hammer on it, give him the business. it might be more easy/fast doing it all from the cli.
sometimes it helped if i did things several times in a row,with no special order (dpkg --configure -a ; apt-get -f install; apt-get autoremove, apt-get clean; aptitude purge ~c;
apt-get install --reinstall; apt-get remove apt-get update, apt-get upgrade, apt-get dist-upgrade; etc.pp)
or wait till someone will give you better advice
good luck

New to Ubuntu and Linux so please keep it simple. Also, where do I go to learn more about Linux so I can fix problems myself? Thanks, Gary

sorry, i missed that part. is the above clear? are you ok with the command-line or with synaptic?
for all of the commands i listed you need sudo-rights, add sudo in front of each like here:
Code:
sudo dpkg --configure -a
most of the above commands are standalone like this:
Code:
sudo apt-get autoremove
the following refer to a package and whats supposed to be done with it:
Quote:
sudo apt-get install <insert_package_name_without<>_signs>
sudo apt-get install --reinstall <instert_package>
sudo apt-get remove --purge <insert_package>
|
package_name needs to be replaced by any package which is said to make trouble.
you could also try how that works with synaptic, i dont know.
good luck
