How do I delete a file I don't know the location of? I've never heard of a .ICEauthority before.
If you've quoted the output correctly, the file is owned by username but the group to which it's been assigned is the root group, of which, presumably, username is not a member.

Try a chown username:username /home/username/.ICEauthority command to correct the problem and see if that helps.

that is if username is your username.

if not replace with your username

username:<username>

so if your username is fred then
chown username:fred /home/fred/.ICEauthority

you also want to
Code:
chgrp users /home/<username>/.ICEauthrity
to get rid of the root group problem

i got the same probleme this morning and you have to chown the files (Change username with the name of the useracount)

chown username /home/username/.ICEauthority

i did that and then i could log back on all my environement.
you could also do chmod 666 /home/username/.ICEauthority

wish will give the right to every one to read and write but its would be much safer to do the chown one who change the owner of the file .ICEauthority is a hiden file or folder the . mean hiden so you know .

if not it will have been deleted then do the reinstallation of the desktop via recovery terminal
