Does ubuntu detect your ethernet card?
What type of ethernet card do you have?
Are you being issued a IP via static or dynamic?
Is your ethernet setting set to static or dynamic?
Are you using a proxy?
Do you possess the DNS server ips. (You might need to add those.)

Hi :-)
Thanks for your questions...I have tried to answer some of them:-
Does ubuntu detect your ethernet card?
YES
What type of ethernet card do you have?
D-Link DFE-530TX Fast Ethernet Adapter
Are you being issued a IP via static or dynamic?
Is was on static but have been told to change to Dynamic by my ISP (DCHP)...then they told me that's all the help they will give me as they don't support Linux :-(
Is your ethernet setting set to static or dynamic?
Don't really know but it works in windows...
Are you using a proxy?
NO
Do you possess the DNS server ips. (You might need to add those.)
Not sure :-(
Can you tell me should there be additional info in the "Network Settings" as on the "General" tab Hostname= Ubuntu, Domain Name is blank, also under "Hosts" I have allot of Ip Addresses but don't know why they are there...e.g. IP Address= ff00::0, Aliases = IP6-mcastprefix....?
Thanks for your help :-)

try
system settings > network settings
click admin mode and enter your password
highlight the network entry then click configure interface
check the settings
ensure that it is enabled and set to auto DHCP
save settings and then try your connection ...

I am really struggling here as Auto DHCP is enabled. I have even upgraded to Ubuntu v6.0.6 LTS but still cannot get onto the web e.g. Google but what has confused me even more is that Ubuntu downloaded the system updates...from the web!!!??? I really want to start using Linux but I may have to stick to Windows :-(

Setting an address in /etc/resolv.conf did it for me. I gave the address of my router.
In /etc/resolv.conf, enter the line:
nameserver 192.168.1.1
or whatever the address of your router, or dns, happens to be.
Can you ping yahoo.com?

To answer two of your questions:
1. You don't have to enter "nameserver 192.168.1.1" The number in "nameserver 192.168.1.1" is an IP address. It is unique to walterbyrd's router. First, you need to find out the IP address of your own router or dns, then you can replace 192.168.1.1 with whatever number is the one you need. If you use a router, try the IP address of the router, else your isp might be able to help you find your dns IP address. (However, i don't really trust the knowledge of those working at isp companies.) You should really try to ping yahoo. It could give more insight into the problem.
2. To ping yahoo.com, open a terminal.(Applications => Accessories => Terminal)
Then type: ping yahoo.com
Post any output you get.

Hi I am still suffering from this problem i.e. no internet access :-( Could it be to do with the fact that my ISP (UkOnline) uses PPPoA and not PPPoE ? Any help would be very much appreciated.
Regards,
Chris.
