can't open attachment in email client(evolution, thunderbird)

I upgraded my ubuntu to 11.10 recently.

When I double click the attached file in my email, (both evolution and thunderbird), the folder contain the file instead of the file itself is opened. This also happens when I double click the file I download from google-chrome.

I also use mendeley to organize my papers, and the same thing happens when I click "explicitly open the pdf".
How can I fix this issue?

In Thunderbird, go to Edit-->Preferences-->Attachments There should be a list of Content Type -- Action.

You can change the default action by the order they appear in the list. For example, for .pdf files, I have the first action of 'Open with xpdf' and the second, to save to a defined location.

If the install formatted your /home/yourusername/ directory, any preferences would have been set to application defaults, not the way you had them before the install. This could have ( should have ) been avoided by not formatting the home directory.

Thanks for your reply, Camorri.

My problem is that I can not open the pdf file with pdf view (evince) within the email or chrome download tab. When I double click it, it turns out open the directory contain the file. But it will directly open it with evince when I double click it in the folder.

Any suggestions about this issue?

This is after you detach the file ? If yes, that is normal operation.

I don't have evince on my system. Is it a stand alone pdf viewer ? ( I use xpdf because it is fast ). If yes, will it not open the attachment if you go into Preferences, other, find the executable for evince, click open, then close, to save the action. Then in Thunderbird, double click the file ?

Sorry on idea on chrome. I don't use it.
