Does your system use UEFI? If so take a look at these two threads, which mentions disabling "Secure Boot" in the settings...

After reading the first link ardvark71 posted; Michael it sounds like disabling the 'secure boot' is certainly worth a try.

Go into your BIOS and 'disable the secure boot' restart and see if you have wifi.

It worked!

I'm going to do a fresh install of 16.04 lts now, do undo all the code I typed into terminal and messed with stuff, and then come back and mark this solved (it should still work). One thing about Linux, you can do a fresh install fairly fast, as opposed to Windoze.
