Can't get wi-fi to work

3 Attachment(s)
I have an HP Pavilion i3 computer. I installed 16.04 lts and all the updates. Problem is I can't get it to recognize my wi-fi. It works fine using ethernet, but I need wifi. It doesn't even see wifi.

Perhaps the wifi card is bad - how do I check that in Terminal

Hi...

Out of curiosity, what happens if you run this command...

Code:

sudo modprobe wl
If that doesn't work, please run the following commands...

Code:

wget -N -t 5 -T 10 https://github.com/UbuntuForums/wireless-info/raw/master/wireless-info && \
chmod +x wireless-info && \
./wireless-info

Then post the results (or a link to them) in your next reply. Thanks! :)

Regards...

I ran several of those in terminal and no luck yet.

Please keep in mind, everyone, I have fresh install of 16.04 lts that has the latest kernel.

Probably because of the reason I mentioned in that post. The one thread was for a Realtek adapter, you have one from Broadcom.

For Ubuntu, try going to System Settings-->Software and Updates, then clicking the "Additional Drivers" tab. It will identify proprietary hardware and search for the drivers, if Ubuntu has the drivers available.

Did that early on, no dice.

I just booted a usb startup of Mint and it can't find any wireless signal(s) either.
Reinstalled Ubuntu 16.04 lts. Still no wireless.

Is it possible my wireless card is dead?

That happened to me once. I got a USB wireless adapter from ThinkPenguin which worked just fine, but, six months later, the computer gave up the ghost. It was about eight years old and had served me well.

As my old mechanic used to say, it didn't owe me a dime.

This computer is 1 year old. It worked fine with morning running Ubuntu 14.04 lts. I wonder if it's the kernel update with 16.04 lts that tricked things up.

I will try to reinstall 14.04 lts tomorrow. Or if there is an easy way, revert back to a previous kernel and still run 16.04 lts (do tell how folks).

If that fails, I'll reinstall Windows on it and see if Windows can run it wirelessly. If so, I'll sell it on eBay because I'm not a Windows user.

I know it's not the wi-fi in the home because other devices, like an iPad, are working fine.

Hi...

While that's a possibility, I'm not inclined to think that's the cause at this point. Is the adapter enabled in your BIOS?

Also, can you also post the results of these commands...

Code:

lspci -nnk | grep -i net -A2
Code:

sudo lshw -C network
Disclaimer: Be careful with commands that are prefaced with "su" or "sudo." They will essentially allow root access to your system. Mistakes could possibly damage or even destroy your OS.
