If you think this is a bug, and you would be able to reproduce it, and be able to make it reproducable to the developers, would you please report it at launchpad.net?
I ran through this for the first time today-- it was confusing to me also.
I installed Ubuntu 6.06 from the DVD included in "The Official Ubuntu Book". After an aborted attempt at live installation, I used the OEM option, which gave me a series of text menus.
After I entered my password of choice, a screen gave the required info: The initial user account would be "oem". After the first login to this account (user oem, password (the password I entered at the prompt), I was to run " sudo oem-config -prepare". This would delete the oem account and prompt for the creation of my user account.
I'm not quite there yet, but I think this is how it plays out...
I had the same problem, folks! It didn't take me long to figure it out but nonetheless I thought I had been sleeping at the wheel. No, I didn't reinstall.
HOWEVER...
Ubuntu keeps forgetting my password! Now THAT is annoying. (I had written it down just to make sure I didn't forget it and yes I had tested it previously to make sure it worked.)
I posted a reply to and quoted from a 'thread' yet when I pressed the [post] button my reply was attached to a DIFFERENT thread. Can any tell me why this happened?

The other day when I rebooted I could not get past the 'login screen' on linux so in XP I searched for "can not logni" without success.
(Duel boot system)
Later I found out that if I used a 'Live CD' and went into the terminal I entered 'sodu konqueror' after giving the "Ubuntu" user all permissions available and changed the file ".ICRauthority" to ".ICRauthority.tmp". When I rebooted without the 'Live CD' I was able to login easily.
Another time I had problems I changed the"/home/.....username..../.kde4" folder to ".kde4.tmp" so it is still available if I need sone data fron it. I was told to delete it but decided to renamr it so it was not used in the logon. A new folder and data was made as I loged in..........
