Can't get a login screen ...

I'm trying to help someone, via cell phone, in an empty (of people) computer lab full of Ubuntu machines. Se rebooted her computer to attempt to solve a printing issue. Now she is confronted with an animated screen that has no login box. She's tried various things to get past the barrier but no happiness yet. Just some moving balls of light that lmove and flash on the screen.

I've used Linux, but Ubuntu very little. Can anyone supply some wisdom?

Sometimes it takes a while for ubuntu to load. Could be minutes.

Time was the culprit, I guess.
She said she hung with it for 10 minutes, then left the room for about 5 minutes.
When she got back, the login screen was up (probably at just about the time I posted).
