I didn't exactly solve the problem but rather bypassed it by changing my ISP from AOL to Virgin Media cable. In so doing I have done away with the BT Voyager USB modem and am now running a Netgear WGR614-6VGUKS wireless router through a Virgin Media cable modem.
Firstly I used Windows XP to set up the connection to access the internet and when I rebooted on Ubuntu, Firefox found the connection immediately.
