Question Can't configure 1280x1024 resolution with Radeon X800 in XOrg in Ubuntu 5.10

I am running Ubuntu 5.10 with Xorg on a radeon X800 Pro 256. The fglrx driver is running normally, but I am unable to get the desired resolution to run. It boots in 1024x768 even though the xorg.conf file says to try 1280x1024 first. My monitor (Viewsonic A90f+) is capable of the resolution. For reference, here is my xorg.conf:

I used fglrxconfig to generate the xorg.conf. I understand you can use aticonfig, but when I try to run it I get the following error:

Code:
./aticonfig: error while loading shared libraries: libfglrx_pp.so.1: cannot open shared object file: No such file or directory
Can someone point me in the right direction? Did I miss something obvious?

Did you try reconfiguring it using

Code:
dpkg-reconfigure x-window-system-core
I think that's what sets up the resolution, that package, I mean.

I ran that command, which yielded no output. I rebooted and nothing changed. I ran it a second time, ran fglrxconfig, and rebooted; still unchanged. Any other suggestions?? It shouldn't be so hard to get Radeon X800 Pro to run in 1280x1024.

Could you examine your /var/log/xorg.0.log log file. Look for a line where the X server tries the 1280x1024 resolution. It may have been rejected for some reason and the next resolution used instead.

The vertical and horizontal frequency settings can be touchy sometimes. Was your monitor detected, or chosen from a list?

One thing you could try using the "gtf 1280 1024 100 -x" command to generate a modeline yourself, and use it. You might also try with a lower vertical refresh rate.

Ok, I tried the gtf command at 1280x1024 80Hz and inserted the modeline in there. I didn't work. I am using the vertical & horizontal synch and refresh numbers from the vendor's site. I also could not make out a particular line in the log file where xorg was trying the 1280x1024 res. Here are the Xorg.0.log and xorg.conf files so that more trained eyes can see what I am missing here.

According to your xorg.0.log file, 1280x1024 is supported for 60hz and 75hz.

Subsection "Display"
Depth 24
Modes "1280x1024" "1024x768" "800x600" "640x480"

Unless only the characters before the underscore count, you have different names for this modeline.
# 1280x1024 @ 80.00 Hz (GTF) hsync: 85.76 kHz; pclk: 149.57 MHz
Modeline "1280x1024_80.00" 149.57 1280 1376 1512 1744 1024 1025 1028 1072 -HSync +Vsync

I changed it to reference the correct modeline, but to no avail. I even tried generating an xorg.conf from scratch. Here are the updated Xorg.0.log and xorg.conf files.

What else can I try?

It seems that Ubunt 5.10 has not the same possibilities to recognize hardware as 5.04 had.

In 5.04 my display was recognized in 5.10 not. So I did the following :
I restarted with a live cd from 5.04 Checked xorg.conf file - copied the sections from the display and changed the name from the display in the next section and restarted. I had a problem because I made a spelling error, but after changing that, my FREN display worked fine in its highest resolution 1280x1024.

You can also try another live system, or check config from your former system.

Hope that helps you as it helped me.

Make a backup of your xorg.conf file and try these tweaks. I removed the "1280x1024" entry and changed the bit level to 16 bits. It could be that that the speed or memory requirements for that resolution can't be met. This is a bit of a shot in the dark. I'm not certain what the log file means by "Future" when it prints out the setting value that includes "1280x1024@75". You may also try a tweak by generating a mode line for 56Hz. or something like that.

[code]Section "Screen"
Identifier "Screen0"
Device "ATI Graphics Adapter"
Monitor "Monitor0"
DefaultDepth 16
#Option "backingstore"

Subsection "Display"
Depth 16
Modes "1280x1024_75.00" "1024x768" "800x600" "640x480"
ViewPort 0 0 # initial origin if mode is smaller than desktop
# Virtual 1280 1024
[code]

Unless I missed it, it looks like you may have removed too much from the "Monitor" section. Check the man page and see what is the minimum entries are. It's possible that the monitor is exagerating it's capabilities a bit and the top end sync ranges need to be tweaked down a bit. Without the HorizSync entry, a default value of 28-33kHz is used which may not be adequate for the resolution you are using. ( Ref: man 5 xorg.conf )
Also if the VertRefresh isn't specified, a default range of 43-72Hz is used. 75hz is beyond this default range. This may explain why this resolution doesn't work.

Also, for "shoot and holler" you might try the exact H/V specs for the monitor:
HorizSync 30 - 86
VertRefresh 50 - 150

Ref: http://www.viewsonic.com/support/desktopdisplays/crtmonitors/aseries/a90fplus/#specs
"h: 30~86kHz, fv: 50~150Hz"

Another thing to try is to remove the _75.00 from the modeline name, so that the name is exactly the same as the internally generated modeline.
# 1280x1024 @ 75.00 Hz (GTF) hsync: 80.17 kHz; pclk: 138.54 MHz
Modeline "1280x1024" 138.54 1280 1368 1504 1728 1024 1025 1028 1069 -HSync +Vsync

Subsection "Display"
Depth 24
Modes "1280x1024" "1024x768" "800x600" "640x480"
ViewPort 0 0 # initial origin if mode is smaller than desktop
# Virtual 1280 1024
EndSubsection

Yet another thing to try, since the default VertRefresh range is 43-72Hz, perhaps you could generate a modeline for 72 hz.
gtf 1280 1024 72 -x
