Alright I've been tearing my hair out for days trying to get Vector or Xubuntu or Kubuntu installed (or even booted so I can test drive). However I keep coming up with these funky errors that seem to be so generic. Mainly it seems like it's a hardware issue. Did some searching but found jack squat. I too get the tty error busybox job control error thingamabob. So, heres my specs;

Intel core 2 duo E6300
Intel stock mobo
1 GB RAM
Dual double layer multi DVD drives
250 GB SATA ll
integrated X3000 graphics

Pretty standard. I also (before all of this) disconnected my secondary optical drive so it wouldn't interfere.

I didn't upgrade or have any peripherals connected. The machine is about five months old and so many people are getting the same error for different reasons. I've tried various forums, reading tons of post and papers but nothing seems out of the ordinary with my machine. Very basic like I said before but sorry for ranting but this is very frustrating.

Once again, nothing Linux is installed. I can't even get the machine to boot properly from the live CD.

I added some additional parameters at boot time and I got a little further but still get stuck with the same error. "Tty blah blah blah". This time before everything comes to a grinding halt it actually begins detecting my hardware. A miracle. Then blam Santa Claus hits a brick wall before he gets to 34th street with something about an intel e1000 network (driver I think). I have a desktop with intel an 82562v networking device. Don't know why this is coming up but once again, any help is greatly appreciated by us lowly newbs.

Except that it is very new. Suggest you google on your motherboard and see if others have had success. If so, which kernel are they using? You may need a distro with the latest kernel.

Alright the board model number is DG965MQ and I've only seen some audio problems with it. Any ideas??

You need to chill out if you want more help on any web forum whether it is linux or otherwise. Many people will be turned off with your pushy large fonts for which there is no need.

The other thing you need to do is actually use some common sense and follow people's advice. I have helped your laziness and done 5 mins of googling ....

Note the comment "The G965 is quite new, so you need a 2.6.18 kernel or newer" as a starting point but please dont be lazy and read thoroughly.

Excuse the large font as I'm frustrated but dude I'm nowhere near lazy. I bought the computer back in October so I didn't think it was that new and I had a hard time finding tech info on it online. I don't want to get banned so I'll keep the rest of what I have to say to myself but thank you oh diligent one.

Oh by the way, I just realised you are using Ubuntu 6.1. Why are you using such an old version with very new hardware. This is one disadvantage of linux in that it takes time for the free linux developers to develop the code so that your newest pieces of hardware will work. Of course the manufacturers always ensure drivers are written for Windows but often you need to wait for linux to catch up I would like to buy a 'santa rosa' notebook which will be coming out soon, but I know it will cause more headaches, so I will have to wait until they have been out for a year or so. I guess the advantage of that is that the prices have dropped by then!

By the way Ubuntu 6.1 runs kernel 2.6.17 and if you remember from the gentoo wiki you need at least 2.6.18.

thanks SO MUCH for being patient and taking the time to help me with this man. Earlier I was frustrated as hell and on like two hours of of sleep. Sorry for the remarks. I really don't mean to offend anyone and even if I don't get it installed I still love what linux stands for FREEDOM OF CHOICE. I mentioned that I genuinely could'nt find a conflict with my board online even on the HCL until you pointed out the fine print to me on intels site. I generally steer away from beta releases but I'm really new to this so how do boot with a different kernel? I reflashed my bios with a newer version three days ago and they already came out with another update. I dont like intel. Will post results/errors in the morning. I'm at work now so in the mean time throw some AMD's on that b!tch!

I would only suggest finding new distros with the latest kernels and testing until you find one that does what you want even if they are beta releases. You can try searching on distrowatch.com to help select.

BTW - I had similar problems to you about 5 yrs ago when I bought one of the first 64-bit AMD chips, then realised it was a bit too advanced for linux at the time (well the motherboard anyway).

So start downloading! I would start with Puppy or Slax which are live distros which just run from RAM to makes things superfast - and they are small downloads.

I actually tried vector and dreamlinux first (and still trying) but DL gave me a "not using mmconfig" error and I still can't find out what that means. Vector 5.8 std doesn't recognize my opt drive no matter what I do and SOHO, well I just get a black screen after I choose a desktop and vid driver from the list. Crazy right? Now I know why they don't work for me :-)

Your version 5.8 at least has 2.6.18 but it was released over 3 months ago.
When you say SOHO which version do you mean?
In any case, the developers of those distros might not have made the kernel with the correct flags that you read about in that gentoo article. They might have skipped a few flags to trim the size of the kernel down. Who knows? So move on and forget Vector and DreamLinux.

Just try a bunch more distros released in the last few weeks. If you are not passionate about any particular distro, then if it doesn't boot, throw it in the archive collection, and try a new one. You seem to keen to get it going, so try new releases of ubuntu, mandriva, opensuse.

quick question, I'm an illustrator/painter and love to tinker with C++, Java, and AS3 from time to time. So, what would be an ideal distro for me to get started with? Drive space is not a problem but I do need a balance between being aesthetically pleasing as well as low RAM requirements ( with all the heavy painting I need all I can get). BTW I love painter and kritas dev is so so syk :-)

Ubuntu (or Kunbuntu) has a lot of support so I would be surprised if it could not do anything that others distros can. I think you'll avoid a lot of headaches if you stick with the large and well supported and easy to use distros as a starting point.

alrighty, I got feisty booted and got to the partitioning. I did'nt have enough time to configure it but I have a question. What should I do about this, I already set aside forty GB and six for swap using partition magic. Should I have done that or should I have just done it through feisty? Also I want to be able to share certain files(paintings, code etc...) between xp and kubuntu. So how do go about setting this up. I just want to make sure I don't screw it up :-)
