C compiler problem/paradox

I tried to install a DVD player in my linux environment and was met with the message that ./configure failed because I have no c compiler on my machine.

So I went to go get one, thinking it would be that easy. it wasn't.

I can't install a c compiler without a c compiler to install it with.

can anyone help me with this bizarre paradox?

I have absolutely no idea how I'm going to manage getting out of this one.

I can't believe I just noticed NOW that I have no c compiler as well.

use apt.

you do need a c compiler to compile a c compiler written in c. Wow that sounds kind of confusing, but to solve your problem just use apt.

sudo apt-get install build-essential

wow just after I did this I rummaged through a few posts and saw a screenshot of someone using sudo and apt-get, and realized I could try:

sudo apt-get install gcc

and it worked great.

thanks a bunch though for the quick response.

I did search, though, and didn't see anything remotely like this. maybe someone can benefit from the post.
