bzip2 from 2001 and misleading System is Up-To-Date according to Synaptic.

Ubuntu v5.1 updated via Synaptic's Package Manager v0.57.4 today Saturday April 15th 2006.

Synaptic Package Manager v0.57.4 reports that System is Up-To-Date.

/usr/bin/bzip2 is v1.02 from 2001.

According to bzip2 developers (www.bzip2.org) bzip2's latest version is v1.03 from 2005.

Can you please explain why and what is happening ?

Peter

The version of bzip2 installed in Ubuntu Breezy is 1.0.2 (From 2001), while the current version is 1.0.3.

If you really want the current version, you can install from source or download the 1.0.3 version from Ubuntu Dapper packages.

May I ask why - zip utilities don't tend to change very fast, and I don't imagine that there would be a huge difference between 1.0.2. and 1.0.3. Do you have a archive that requires 1.0.3?

I hope this helps
