bridging causes a loss in my internet connectivity


hello everyone,
im trying to set up a host interface for virtualbox on a laptop..
the idea is that for the guest OS to communicate with the host OS and get internet connectivity a virtual iface should be created in the host os (ubuntu 7.10) and consequently i should bridge this virtual iface with the ethernet iface (eth0) and a virtual bridge br0..

i tried using the automatic way (the scripts) as virtualbox help menu suggested, but i was losing the internet connectivity on my ppp0 connection.
so i tried the manual way too...

i used as a reference this guide

but i still lose the connectivity... i am almost sure it's smth to do with the routing table...
but i dunno how to solve it:

what i don't know is how to redirect a default gw from the br0 traffic to the ppp0... cause basically what happens is that i lose the ability to do ssh sessions

i tried like
route add default gw 10.6.6.6 br0 but it failed ...

how can i make sure default traffic (not for the 192.168.0.0 network) and unknown traffic (like dns) will go through the ppp0, so that i will have both a small local network between the host os and the guest os and at the same time be able to share the ppp connection with both..?
