As I understand it, xorg is XFree86 "reincarnated" because of trouble regarding the path and philosophy of development of the XFree86 project--so the name XFree86 will still appear in a lot of places but basically refers now to what's called xorg. That's probably why the error message uses the term XFree86. In fact, till a few months ago the xorg.conf file in my setup was only a symbolic link to a XFree86.conf file, which is the one I had to actually edit to make changes.
Have you tried using the "ati" generic driver as an experiment? That's the driver I use, but then my card is an old Rage Fury card and not a Radeon.
I hope somebody more knowledgable than me and who has a Radeon card will step in and give some suggestions. Meanwhile, have you tried asking on the Ubuntu Forums? I've received a lot of helpful advice there on many kinds of problems.
