bootchart problem with removing and corrupted udev
 

I installed bootchart with synaptic, Kubunti 8.04 -AMD64 but when I tried to remove it again I have all sorts of problems. I removed it because it created large file and wasn't that easy to figure out.

The /udev file space is filling up completeely in a couple of hours. This was caused by three processes that ran "root timer 2 secs". This I traced to a 'stop-bootchart' service that was left after the main program was removed. Fixed by using *remove completely*. Now I have three '/bin/busybox sh /bin/bootchart bottom' processes instead that fill the '/udev' file space.

Despite removing bootchart completely, something is reinstalling an executable 'bootchart' binary in /udev/.bootchart/bin each time system starts.

There is another problem with logging in caused by the permissions of '/dev/null' being incorrect. There is a bug report for this but no real fix. https://launchpad.net/ubuntu/+bug/63031 It first showed up over two years ago. I have tried the fixes suggested but it has not cured the problem.

The '/dev ' directory is completely changed from before I installed 'bootchart'

Then they both list devices but the lists are not the same.

If I try to log in using graphical login screen I get logged out again immediately. Also not working is there is no default log in selection, if I select option, log in (and get logged out again) the default is gone.

I can get to desktop by using console login as user, then 'sudo startx' which gets my normal user desktop. Any console that I open is root without needing su.

I have a backup image of the system that is a month old.

Do I just delete current broken system and restore the image?

Just copy the '/dev' directory from image?

Wait and see if a fix comes in ?
