boot up text colors missing???

I'm running Xubuntu 6.10 XFCe and I don't like the splash screen start up/shut down screens. I like to watch all the lines of stuff scroll by. I went into my /boot/grub/menu.lst file and changed my kernel parms removing the "quiet splash" from the end of the line. see below

kernel /boot/vmlinuz-2.6.17-10-generic root=/dev/sda1 ro quiet splash

This gives me the text start-up that I was after but I have no color text. It's not that big of a deal, I just like the looks of it.

If anyone can offer some help on this I would greatly appreciate it.

Thanks for your input, that is exactly what I want. Xubuntu 6.10. seems to be a little different though. It doesn't work. My init-functions file seems to be different. Has anyone got this to work on Xubuntu?
