/boot/grub/menu.lst gets re-written by apt-get..NOT COOL

All,
not sure if i'm doing something wrong that's causing this to happen or not, but i have Ubuntu running on my workstation at home, along with Win XP. I haven't boote U in a while(few weeks, anyway) so yesterday I did and ran apt-get to DL updates for the system, which is did. Problem is XP disappeared from grub menu, and my menu.lst had been overwritten and replaced with a generic one. So, i reconstructed my entry for win xp(and even remembered chainload ! :) ) But what I want to know is, is this normal? I have backed up my menu.lst file so when this happens again, i can simply copy the entry for xp out. Is this normal, expected, or a bug?? thx

apt-get probably updated grub. So, menu.lst got re written?

Umm.. not an expert on this, perhaps you could ask in the grub forums.

Geek's got the right idea. I believe apt-get actually asks you or warns you that this will happen. You're smart, and you've backed up menu.lst- definately the thing to do. Next time if it happens, make it easier by deleting menu.lst and renaming your backup one to it. Saves cutting and pasting sections, and of course make sure you back your new one up again ;)
