Blank screen upon start up - 7.10 Server

Hello all,

Recently installed 7.10-server on my old P3 computer.

Installed fine, loaded up and greeted me with the command line interface. I'm not a huge fan of using purely command line and so I went ahead and apt-get install ubuntu-desktop. It did its thing for a while and then finally finished and I restarted.

Upon restart I get the ubuntu splash loading screen with the bar, it ticks up to full then all I get is a black screen. After about 5 seconds my monitor (CRT) does its static-y noise to say "I don't have a signal anymore" -- though its light is still green (not orange).

I let the computer sit for a while and nothing happens, I cannot change to any of the tty screens (ctrl alt f#).

I tried booting in the equivalent of safe mode and did a /etc/init.d/gdm start and again got a black screen and this time the computer rebooted itself.

I'm thinking an issue with video drivers? Though maybe something else. The computer has a radeon 9600xt agp card on just a default crt monitor (max res 1600x1200).

Thanks for any/all help in advance.

ok, so I went into my bios and selected the onboard video option... when the system loaDS, BETWEEN the system info and the boot, hit esc... select the first option and give it a minute, it SHOULD load... worked for me... THEN you can install your video card, if you have one... I also did it with my ethernet cable unplugged, not sure if that made a difference, but other people mentioned doing that... let me know if this helps
