Blank screen after Ubuntu loads

[Log in to get rid of this advertisement]
I have Ubuntu 9.04 installed with Gnome interface and everthing has been working fine for some time now.

The other day though day thoough I was trying to bring up the Pidgin (messenger) dialog box. Note the Pigdin status and the shutdown button share the same icon on the menu bar on mine.

I pulled down a menu from it's status icon on the gnome menu bar. It must have been something like guest. Suddenly the whole screen goes blank.

I reboot thinking it will solve the problem but no. Ubuntu starts it's loading logo but after that blank no login. Turns out login screen is there but it shows nothing on the screen. (I tried to login anyway and I get the music like it's just loaded - Nothing on screen though)

Anyone know how I get get out of this blank screen mode? Is there a safe mode or previous settings I can do?

Thanks,
Venk

As the disk starts it's boot from "power up", press the escape key (ESC) and select Recovery or whatever else you think may help.

Er.. Well I tried recovery and it gave me a menu. My bad I tried the xfix to fix video problems. I may have a bigger problem now. Last time I tried this before and and I wound up reinstalling my whole system.

Now when it loads it gives me messed up load screens. Like old junk from the video buffer. It probably has to do with the fact I am using 3rd party drivers. I have a ATI Radeon 3650 video card.

Maybe I can manually load the correct drivers? Any suggestions?
