Anyone notice much difference in performance between SuSE 10.2 or Edgy using Beryl? Thinking of changing to Ubuntu Edgy from SuSE 10.2 on my laptop. Some have commented SuSE is better with Beryl/Compiz/XGL than Ubuntu.
Nvidia Geforce Go 7400
Heh, no really..you're talking about Linux. Both use Linux kernels. And pretty similar software. Beryl, X and your graphics card drivers are the same. You're planning to run either of them on the same hardware. So, if there is any difference, it's
- performance: if either SuSE or Ubuntu consumes your resources (like RAM) more, that may affect the overall performance of your "desktop experience" (including Beryl); this is what it's with everything. Both SuSE and Ubuntu use cool newish desktops (KDE or Gnome) so..no, I don't think you'll notice a big difference, or if you do, you can pretty easily tweak either of them so you won't even notice it.
- ease of installation: because both distributions are mentioned as "Beryl distributions" at beryl-project's site, I don't think either of them is more or less easy to install.
Shortly said, no I don't think you see any big (or small) difference in running Beryl on SuSE or Ubuntu, as long as you use the same software versions (of X, display drivers, ...). I myself would have a favourite among those two, but for completely non-Beryl reasons. SuSE and Ubuntu differ with their logos, preinstalled software, package management and so on, but they are both Linux operating systems so..you should get it. If you're tempted to try Ubuntu, try it -- then you'll see.
Thanks. Actually I had been using SuSE 10.2 on both desktop and laptop (using Beryl). Now running Linux Mint (Ubuntu)on desktop and really enjoy the improved speed, newer software and package management.
I teach in China and my students ask me what cool 3D operating system I am using the projector. I tell them it's Linux -the office operating system of their own government.
To think that the performance would be the same on both distros because they're both Linux kernels is not correct. Distro are setup very differently from one another. even with respect to the kernel, even if it's the same kernel version.
I've compared Beryl on Suse 10.2 and Mepis 6.5 beta7 (based on Dapper) on the same box and I can say that the performance is notably different. I have to credit Suse with the more responsive desktop, but it's more refined and reliable on Mepis. I didn't have to do anything special to get it to run on Mepis - not true with Suse.
Beryl is still new and buggy, but I'm sold on it's value beyond eye candy.
I believe that is true that SuSE 10.2 may outperform Ubuntu using Beryl. But I have noticed Ubuntu (Linux Mint 2.2) is much faster than SuSE in booting and application startup (ie openoffice 2.1) on even a slower single CPU machine. And I have just now seen that SuSE is becoming much slower than yesterday when I used if for the first time with a projector. And it is quite buggy using Beryl. Crashes alot. So SuSE has become a problem and I am probably going to remove it from my laptop.
I have to report that according to my experience (Ubuntu) Linux Mint is a much faster system than SuSE 10.2 and the beryl performance is on par with SuSE. I won't go back to SuSE unless they make major speed improvements.
