Beryl and Kubuntu (64bit) problems

I've been obsessively trying to get this working correctly for the past two days, doing constant research and dreaming about it at night. I have not come up with any answers for this.

I've looked at just about every wiki out there for this, and nothing seems to help. The latest one had me create a bunch of preference files and downgrade Beryl to the previous version (it claimed that the newest version that comes with Ubuntu was/is incomplete). Now Beryl doesn't work at all.

Before I did what that last wiki said to do, I was able to get the 3d cube desktop, all the effects, but window decorations were completely gone. When I FIRST got it going, everything was working--then I must have clicked on the wrong Emerald theme--because suddenly I couldn't change themes anymore, it was stuck on one. Then when I went back to it being the KDE window manager and back to Beryl, the window decorations were completely gone.

When I'd look at the shell, it would keep talking about glx something not being able to do something 32bit (sorry, too many wiki's ago to remember), and then found out that it thought I had a pointing device and an erasing device in my xorg.conf. So I took those out and looked a bit more to realize there were problems with the way my monitor was listed. So I did more research and found out about nvidia-preferences, went through that--that made xorg.conf have the least amount of extra junk than any of the previous ones. Still didn't help the problem, but at least there was less crap in there.

The messages in the shell also talked about not being able to find a valid Clearlooks file. I installed everything I could get my hands on for Clearlooks, starting with "sudo apt-get install clearlook*", which still didn't help.

Then I tried every tutorial, every wiki, every message board I could find talking about this, and eventually found this one http://wiki.beryl-project.org/wiki/I...eisty_with_XGL that gave me the instructions that put things in the state it currently is in--Beryl doesn't work at all now--luckily it reverts back to the KDE window manager when it fails.

Does anyone have any suggestions?

One place I saw suggested that I uninstall everything Compiz, uninstall everything Beryl, then re-install everything Beryl. Does this seem reasonable? Should I use the newest Beryl, or should I stick with the version that http://wiki.beryl-project.org/wiki/I...eisty_with_XGL suggests?

EDIT: I am able to look through all the Beryl menus, the Beryl Settings Manager, the Emerald Theme Manager, but of course they don't do anything unless I was to use Compiz or Beryl, and neither of them work since I did what the tutorial I linked to above said to do.

Please let me know what information you need.

After uninstalling, reinstalling (through apt-get), and changing the xorg.conf file yet again, it worked. Now I'm just having a hard time selecting Emerald themes, but at least I'm at this point now.
