Back Panel - No Sound, Headphones - Sound

hi all,

i'm able to get sound through the headphone jack (with a set of headphones, of course), but i get no sound out of the mobo's back panel sound jack.

os: u6.10 - edgy eft
mobo: asus a8s-x
chipset: SI7012
module: snd-intel8x0
alsa mixer - everything is maxed

i'm at a loss when it comes to troubleshooting this problem.

any guidance would be appreciated.

tia...

since ubuntu recognizes my sound card, as evidenced by my headphones playing, what method of troubleshooting can i follow to try and nail down this problem?

is there a setting that will shut off mobo sound, but not headphone sound? i checked the bios and sound is on. i turned everything up in alsamixer, but i still didn't get sound. i'm not sure if the settings were actually saved when i hit escape to leave the alsamixer.

is there a mobo jumper setting that has to do with sound? is there a way to test the mobo for sound? i can hear the internal beeps at start up.

any help or guidance is appreciated.

tia...
