Audio Stopped Working

I'd been running Ubuntu 10.10 with audio working fine (except for some crackles which I still get!) for about 8 months, when suddenly, earlier this year it stopped working.

I've tried following this post https://help.ubuntu.com/community/So...otingProcedure and step 3 told me to run the following command and post the output:

Code:

wget -O alsa-info.sh http://www.alsa-project.org/alsa-info.sh; chmod +x ./alsa-info.sh; ./alsa-info.sh
I did that and have posted the information provided by it below.

I tried the remainder of the steps and noticed that also in step 3, it says that all the driver versions should be identical. As you can see below, mine aren't. Unfortunately, they don't say how to correct this if this is the case!

Quote:

!!ALSA Version
!!------------
Driver version: 1.0.23
Library version: 1.0.24.1
Utilities version: 1.0.24.2
Probably most other information you might need from me is in the report posted below.

I've already tried:
Code:

add-apt-repository ppa:ricotz/unstable; sudo apt-get update; sudo apt-get --reinstall install alsa-base alsa-utils; killall pulseaudio; rm -r ~/.pulse*
The laptop is an Advent 9115. It's about 3 years old.

Thanks for your help guys.

I'd been running Ubuntu 10.10 with audio working fine (except for some crackles which I still get!) for about 8 months, when suddenly, earlier this year it stopped working.
How did it stop? If it stopped while it was playing something, and if you weren't doing something at the time, then it could well be a hardware problem: dead sound card, for instance.
If not, try following the steps in this guide. I've always found it effective.
If you're lazy and optimistic you might try running
Code:

alsactl init
before following the steps in the link above.

Thanks Impert. I ran the command and got the following output:

Code:

alsactl init
Found hardware: "HDA-Intel" "Realtek ALC662 rev1" "HDA:10ec0662,10190000,00100101" "0x1019" "0x5a00"
Hardware is initialized using a generic method

I think before I go any further, I should explain what I've done since my previous post!

I found another troubleshooting guide here, which I started to follow. I ran the first suggested command, which was:

Code:

ubuntu-bug audio
but it tells me that PulseAudio has crashed and asks if I want to report it, to which I responded, "Yes". It then informed me that the package was not genuine and could not be reported!

I tried reinstalling PulseAudio and noticed that in doing so, it seemed to be using some unstable sources. I don't think I would have authorized those knowingly. I deselected the offending sources, then ran:

Code:

apt-get remove --auto-remove pulseaudio
apt-get clean
apt-get update
apt-get install --auto-remove pulseaudio

to the last command, I recieved the following output:

Code:

root@peter-accent-ubuntu:~# apt-get install --auto-remove pulseaudio
Reading package lists... Done
Building dependency tree
Reading state information... Done
Some packages could not be installed. This may mean that you have
requested an impossible situation or if you are using the unstable
distribution that some required packages have not yet been created
or been moved out of Incoming.
The following information may help to resolve the situation:

The following packages have unmet dependencies:
pulseaudio : Depends: libpulse0 (= 1:0.9.22~0.9.21+stable-queue-32-g8478-0ubuntu21.1) but 1:0.9.22+stable-queue-24-g67d18-0ubuntu1~10.10~ricotz1 is to be installed
Recommends: pulseaudio-module-x11 but it is not going to be installed
Recommends: pulseaudio-esound-compat but it is not going to be installed
E: Broken packages

The problem now, is that I'm left without PulseAudio unless I can figure out what to do about the issue above and how to do it! :-)

Thanks again.

Sorry, forgot to answer this.

I don't know. I don't use it all the time. I just noticed it wasn't working one time when I tried to use it and never worked since. I'm suspecting that it was broken by an update or installation of software.

snowweb 07-31-2011 02:50 AM

I seem to have fixed the dependency problem and successfully (I think) re-installed PulseAudio.

I did:

Code:

apt-get install libpulse0=1:0.9.22-0ubuntu1 pulseaudio-module-x11 pulseaudio-esound-compat pulseaudio
This seems to have forced it to use the correct version of libpulse0 and also install the two recommended packages at the same time as pulseaudio.

However, when I ran "ubuntu-bug audio" as suggested by earlier tutorial, it still informed me that PulseAudio seems to have crashed, asked if I wanted to report this (I answered yes) and then informed me that it couldn't do that because it was not a "genuine Ubuntu package"!

However, when it was downloaded, according to apt-get, it was downloaded from

http://ppa.launchpad.net/ubuntu-audio-dev/ppa/ubuntu/ maverick/main

I also ran and obtained the following:

Code:

# alsactl init
Found hardware: "HDA-Intel" "Realtek ALC662 rev1" "HDA:10ec0662,10190000,00100101" "0x1019" "0x5a00"
