Angry ati problems (again), installing fglrx (and I've read TFM)

Hi all,

I'm trying to get the ati fglrx drivers to work on a fresh (k)ubuntu 6.06 install. As usual with the ati drivers and as many others already have experienced, I'm having no luck with it.

I followed the instructions at both

https://wiki.ubuntulinux.org/BinaryDriverHowto/ATI

and

http://wiki.cchtml.com/index.php/Ubu...allation_Guide

I tried both the drivers provided by Ati, and the drivers in the ubuntu apt-get repository. No luck with both of them, they both provide the same error message (see below). Which gives me the impression that it might be a dependency problem rather then a driver specific problem.

When I tried to check whether I succeeded in the install by means of the fglrxinfo, fgl_glxgears and glxinfo i get the following error message:

Error: Could not find RGB GLX visual.

I've had quite some experience installing these drivers under Slackware, but I just can't get them to work under Ubuntu.

Can anybody see what I'm missing / doing wrong?

Read my thread on DRI (Link in my sig). It has an extensive ATI section.

Since you've played with ATI in Slackware, though, I'm assuming you have already read it.

I have a similar problem installing the latest ATI drivers in a laptop with ATI Radeon Mobility 9600 using Ubuntu 5.1.

Here's the output of the procedure:

billy@ubuntu:~/ati$ sudo sh ./ati-driver-installer-8.24.8-x86.run --get-supported
