Ati 9550 problem with Ubuntu 7.10, and 5 button mouse configuration
I installed a Ubuntu 7.10 version ( kiwi witch has flash and video codecs installed) 2 times so far and tried once on a Kubuntu 64 bit platform and always ended up in my video card not being recognized, and I can't figure out why, I've been through many tutorials and none worked.
It all starts the same, I install the Ubuntu driver for my Ati 9550 automatically (tried with the proprietary driver as well ) and then I install the X.org for compiz fusion, it all works at first but after some time I don't know why it stops recognizing my video driver and my 3d stops and I get a resolution of 800*600 out of a vesa - generic vesa .. driver, my Ati driver as I said is not responding anymore...
I need help, ... oh and the other problem I'm having is configuring my 5 button mouse.
The problem isn't with the installation.
Can someone tell me how can I figure out why my video card stopped responding.
I'm in need of help... I do recognize I'm a noob at Linux operating systems but I'm willing to learn.
If you are in a similar situation please replay.

Stephan,
Did you ever find a solution to your problem? I'm a complete novice and I'm moving across to Ubuntu Gutsy from Win XP. I'm finding things a little difficult but its all part of the fun I suppose!
I too have the Radion 9550 and have tried a ridiculous amount of times to get the card to work with compiz fusion.
I've tried the Ubuntu Ati driver but direct rendering is turned off. I've tried configuring the effects via compiz manager but these don't take effect because the xorg.conf settings won't allow me to set any desktop effects etc. I'm not sure if this is connected to my monitor (which isn't recognised properly - LG studioworks 77m) since I can't set my screen resolution correctly.
Anyhow I've also tried using the proprietry ati drivers but at logon all I get is errors asking me to use safe graphics mode or configure the display myself. No matter what settings I try it always comes back to safe graphics mode.
I understand that there are varioous workarounds by modifying the xorg.conf file but I suppose I'm just wondering how I can even get the card to use direct rendering and therefore the compiz effects with the supplied Ubuntu driver. Did yours just work on install?

ok.. this is still coming from a novice but I finaly managed to figure it out.....
with ati grafics it's a litle bit tricky ... but I managed to make it work... here are the stapes I took after install of ubuntu
1). restricted drivers manager... and let off the restriction on the graphic. now it still dosn't work when I try to let compiz fusion.
2). install xorg + update your system.. and make shure you let multi universe and all the other repositories work from system\administration\soft sources
3). at the \system\preferences\appearacnce enable compiz .... you may olso install compiz custom efects ...4 extra setings
I don't know how to roll back the system so that you may undo your mistakes... unless you want to reinstall ubuntu you should remouve any soft that I mentioned... before a clean install .... there is no need to modify the xorg.cofig
if you falow the steps on a clean system it should work.... I treyed 2 install 3 times before I managed to make it woek...
oh... and be carefull to not install any grafic -card related soft or xorg it may make the system unstable and make u end up in the same situation..... and don't worry about the monitor... I don't think it has anything to do with it... it's not important as long as it is a monitor.... mine is a acer AL1715 .. with a 17" display..
and then it works...

Stephan,
Thanks I will give it a try. I'm currently trying to iron out the teething problems with the display and other bits before creating a dual boot system with XP and Ubuntu. I hope your solution will work for me too. I'll try again with a fresh install tonight.
When you say install xorg (I know this is a noob question) do you mean from "sudo apt-get xorg" or can I just use the version of xorg already installed?

Oh Now the problem is fixed But I'm experiencing many other problems.. and it's curious because my desktop effects work perfect using hardware acceleration.. but my video games aren't working right I enter the game , the menu works fine but once I get the game loaded it stops responding or the text doesn't show and the textures get scrambled and when getting back to the menu I can't see it clearly anymore...
and the same thing happens in wine...
I mention that the games fps are ok but you can't see anything right
