Associating shortcut keys to applications

Hello,
I have a large no. of applications open and there are a few I frequently switch between. Is there a way I can associate a keyboard shortcut with applications such when I enter that shortcut I am quickly taken to that application. Like 'Alt + Tab' but instead of giving me a bunch of applications it takes me to the exact one.

I don't know of a way to accomplish that exactly. In fact, I don't believe it is possible. I could be wrong.
The closest you might get to that is to have different programs on different workspaces, and switch workspaces with a keyboard shortcut.

salilsurendran, i would start looking at different window managers and their capabilities.
i use openbox, and something like that could surely be set up through the <applications> section of its rc.xml.
have a look here: http://openbox.org/wiki/Help:Applications
