Archive manager not recognising ZIP files - suggests it's a text file.

Ubuntu 7.04.

I recently installed this on an ACER laptop (4710Z). When I open a ZIP file (*.ZIP) it suggests that it's a *.TXT file. <Quote>The contents of the file indicate that the file is of type "plain text document" ....<UnQuote> and there's only a CANCEL button. SO I CANCEL.

Next, when I "open with" and choose archive manager, the message is different. <Quote>An error occured while loading the archive<UnQuote> with a COMMAND LINE OUTPUT button, which when clicked says <Quoet>End of central directory signature not found. Either this or it constitutes one disk of a multi part archive ...<UnQuote>

Next I went to the folder via the command line to check the file. All OK.

Anybody else encountered this? Do I have to go back to an earlier version of Archive Manager. Couldn't find any references to this after a brief search. So here I am.

End

Have you tried unzipping it from the CLI using unzip? If you keep getting the same errors it could be that your file is corrupt.

I've never had any troubles with zip files. My guess the file is corrupt or improperly labeled with the zip extension.

By the way, you can check if its truly a zip file by entering
Code:
$file somefile.zip
If its not found to be a zip file, then the file could be corrupt or as suggested above incorrectly labelled as a zip file.

Matter solved. No problem really.

When I closely examined the file I realised that the file size wasn't matching with what it should be. (Actually, I was transferring this ZIP file from my older box via a USB stick. While populating the USB with my ZIP files, I remembered that the stick had got full and so apparently the archive wasn't complete).

By the way, when the USB became full, the USB rights got changed to read-only and had to be reset.

End
