Apply a kernel patch

I have a patch i need to apply. I have apt-get installed linux-source-2.6.22 and extracted it in /usr/src/ , but I dont want to have to manually configure the kernel, i want it to be the same configuration that it is by default with ubuntu except with the patch. is there a way to apply the same configuration?

the patch instructions say i just need to apply and run make modules && make modules_install, so do i really need to run on a different kernel or is there a way to apply just the new module to the existing kerenl?

Is there a config file in /boot. If so load that as your reference and then the ' make ', ' make modules_install ', and finally ' make install '

I would suggest you read this.
Much easier than it used to be for earlier Ubuntu levels.
