App for .AVI files om 64-bit Kolala

I have the restricted extras installed, mPlayer, Dragon Player, Movie Player, and Xine. When I want to play a downloaded .avi file, I receive an error, "Archive type not supported." What else may I need? The gstreamer codecs are also installed. Again, this is 64-bit. I noticed a difference with Java on a 64 vs. 32-bit on my laptop. If there is no simple solution, I'll live.

What desktop are you using?
Have you tried nautilus or dolphin/konqueror to determine default application?

Avi is just a container format. The important bit is how the contents, ie, video stream, is encoded. You can use mediainfo to find out more info on the file.

Also, I believe the codecs included in Ubuntu's official repos have been stripped of some non-free components. You can find an unstripped libavcodec and the non-free-codecs package from the medibuntu repo.
