Any problems upgrading Breezy to Feisty?
 

I was getting 404's when trying to get updates for my Breezy install, and had presumed it was no longer supported. The only other release I could remember was Feisty, so changed my /etc/apt/sources.list to point to Feisty repo's. I'm on dialup and downloading the Feisty packages still has about 8 hours to go.

I think I may be jumping a release in going from Breezy to Feisty. All my Debian installs have just been upgraded to the next release with no problems, but I'm unsure about what I'm attempting to do at the moment.

Any suggestions about possible problems I may have?

Uh, lol. Its probably not gonna work. You can't go from Breezy to Feisty. Everything I've read, suggests you cannot *skip* a distribution. So you'd have to upgrade from Breezy, to Dapper, to Edgy, to Feisty. Going from breezy to feisty, is almost certain not to work. I'd suggest canceling the upgrade ASAP, and ordering the CD's from canonical, or buying them somewhere, and doing a clean ubuntu install.

Usually you do not jump multiple releases in an upgrade
 

If you want to jump multiple releases, you are advised to back up the data content you are interested in, do a fresh install of the release you are interested in, then restore the data you are interested in keeping.

Feisty Fawn is the current release in the typical six month Ubuntu cycle. It is release 7.04. Release 7.10, Gutsy Gibbon, is due in October, hence the 10 in the numbering.

The current Long Term Support (LTS) release is Ubuntu Dapper, 6.06. Edgy is release 6.10.

I would say you have three options: the LTS release (stable, but not the latest stuff), Feisty Fawn, the current release, and Gutsy Gibbon, the release now in its Alpha 4 release, soon to go to Beta test and due out in October.

Hope that gives you enough information to decide which approach to take that makes the most sense for you.

I didn't realise that I was trying to jump 2 releases.I think I will carry on DL'ing the Feisty packages almost to completion, then copy /var/cache/apt/archives to one of my Fat32 partitions, which is what I normally do when I have more than one instance of a distro installed. Saves a bit of dialup time when updating.Then when I get past the Dapper, and Edgy upgrades, I can copy back the Feisty packages.

Next step change the /etc/apt/sources.list to point to Dapper, and have another go at upgrading.

I have no credit card, so there's no chance of buying the discs. Dialup is slow, but eventually gets there.

Hi Brian. Thanks for the info. I don't like doing big jumps. I think the best bet is to continue downloading the Feisty packages near to completion, then copy them to my Fat32 partition for future use.Next do an apt-getclean. The next step is to change my /etc/apt/sources.list to point to Dapper, and go for an upgrade to Dapper. Dialup is a bunch of fun, but I'm used to it. Perhaps the Breezy to Dapper upgrade won't be so big, I should be so lucky.
