If you have a good internet connection, you can also use the netboot image.
For Xenial (16.04):
64-bit:

Beware that it will download
everything from the web, so you'll have to make sure the internet won't disconnect until the installation is finished.
In software selection window just press Next (by default, only "standard system utilities" will be installed), and after the installation is done you'll get a clean system with no graphical shell at all.
After that you can log in and do:

sudo apt install cinnamon lightdm
sudo reboot
... and that's basically it.
Oh, and you may want to comment out or remove lines for your LAN/WLAN cards in /etc/network/interfaces and reboot (again) so those cards are managed by NetworkManager.
