Exclamation Alternative install image needed for Ubuntu 16.04 LTS!

Hi all,

I'm trying to find the Ubuntu alternative image for Ubuntu 16.04. Unfortunately, i can't find it. Maybe i'm looking at the wrong place or it is simply not available. Anyone out there who can help me further?

If it is possible, which installer image comes with NO desktop environment whatsoever? I'm trying to play with Ubuntu and the Cinnamon desktop environment (yes, i know, i can use Mint+Cinnamon)

The reason for this is simple: Mint 17.3 + Cinnamon keeps freezing/crashing on my system while Ubuntu 16.04 LTS runs like a cuckoo clock...

Many thanks for your help!

Hi there,

I don't think there is an "alternate" image.

Have you considered the approach mentioned at http://www.webupd8.org/2016/04/how-t...in-ubuntu.html or http://ubuntuhandbook.org/index.php/...ubuntu-16-04/?

alternate 16.04

Dear Nomko
I guess you are looking in here .
http://releases.ubuntu.com/16.04/
and it seems that there are not a classic alternate version.
I have three suggestions:
  1. 1. try debian, During installation time, there is an option to not install desktop only console
  2. 2. try ubuntu mate
  3. 3. try server edition, that comes with no desktop

Does it help you?
Regards,
M

If you have a good internet connection, you can also use the netboot image.

For Xenial (16.04):

64-bit: http://archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu/dis...tboot/mini.iso

32-bit: http://archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu/dis...tboot/mini.iso

Beware that it will download everything from the web, so you'll have to make sure the internet won't disconnect until the installation is finished.

In software selection window just press Next (by default, only "standard system utilities" will be installed), and after the installation is done you'll get a clean system with no graphical shell at all.

After that you can log in and do:

Code:
sudo apt update
sudo apt install cinnamon lightdm
sudo reboot
... and that's basically it.

Oh, and you may want to comment out or remove lines for your LAN/WLAN cards in /etc/network/interfaces and reboot (again) so those cards are managed by NetworkManager.

I tried that approach shown on the site of webupd8 but after installation Cinnamon shows some weird things i believe it has to do with Unity and such. So therefore i would like to experiment with Ubuntu by installing a fresh clean version without any desktop.

I'll try this! Thanks!

I'm confused, Bud.

What you are describing is absolutley the "Server" image. Easy solution.

No other option makes any sense if you want to "experiment with Ubuntu without any desktop installed".

On this page: http://releases.ubuntu.com/16.04/

you want either 64-bit: http://releases.ubuntu.com/16.04/ubu...rver-amd64.iso

or 32-bit: http://releases.ubuntu.com/16.04/ubu...erver-i386.iso
