After upgrading to Ubuntu 16.04, resolution messed up. Error: “Could not apply the stored configuration for monitors”

I'm a bit of a newbie to Linux. I just updated to version 16.04. On starting it up, this message appeared:

Code:

Could not apply the stored configuration for monitors
None of the selected modes were compatible with the possible modes
Trying modes for CRTC 618
CRTC 618: trying mode 800x600@75Hz with output at 1353x842@60Hz (pass 0)
CRTC 618: trying mode 800x600@75Hz with output at 1353x842@60Hz (pass 1)

Also, my resolution is messed up and my mouse and trackpad are not functioning correctly. They respond quite unpredictably and very slowly--to the point that Ubuntu is very difficult to use.

I see that people have already asked about this error online, but I don't see answers that seem relevant for me (or maybe I don't understand them). The problem seems to be related to graphics driver issues, but I don't have a great understanding of what that means. I'd be very grateful for any hints on how to deal with this. Thank you.

You guys really like pain don't you ? 14-04 is running like a clock.upgrades should never be done, always do a clean install, but for now hold on till 16.04 is somehow workable since at this moment not worth the trouble cause is full of bugs,so you should keep 14.04 and forget any other version at least for now, unless off course you like pain!.
