After update from Kubutu 8.10 to 9.04 sound is intermittent

I have recently updated from a perfectly good working Kubuntu on my old Dell Optiplex GX150 to the Jaunty Jackalope 9.04 by downloading the new version.

The installation seemed to go well but the sound on opening the desktop and playing music is now not continuous. I appears to have gaps at regular intervals. I have tried changing the player and the different sound settings but the end result is just this intermittent sound.

Does anyone have any ideas?
