Activating keyborad "windows" button..any ideas
Does anybody, know how to activate the "windows" button on the keyboard so I can directly jump to the Gnome/Kde "start" menu?

Well in SuSE 9.2 and KDE 3.3 the 'Windows' key (I prefer to call it the 'OS' key :) ) activates the start menu when the NUM lock is turned off. I guess it's the same situation for Ubuntu.

Click on 'Show the panel menu' with the mouse and tap the Windows key. (Notice that Alt+F1 is replaced by the name of the Windows key). Click Close and test it out. By the way, this is where you can get some of those fancy keys on some keyboards (like play, mute, etc.) to do something useful in Linux. HTH, David |

You don't have to call it the 'OS' key as it is known (in Gnome) as the "Meta L" key, or as Ubuntu calls it (since they love to change things) the "Super L" key. Appropriate mod points for anyone who actually knows what the 'L' stands for! S.D. |
the L stands for Left.
my keyboard has two "windows" keys and they are appropriately named "Super_L" and "Super_R". Now my question is how do i get the keyboard shortcuts to allow me to press either key to open the gnome menu instead of having to choose one or the other. [edit] also it's known as the "Super" key in mandriva as well. |
You could use xmodmap to remap the right key so it's interpreted as the left, making them effectively the same key. . .
