I need access to internet through modem connection.
I have 2 questions :
You access the internet through a service provider. You have to apply first in your nearest Internet Service Provider (ISP) to become as subscriber (and have an access privilege.)
Quote:
1.Can I do it by using normal telephone line ?
Modems as made for that type of connection. Yes through landline.

What are the credentials to authenticate (mean : user nad passwd) ?
Usually the ISP will give you a user name and a password in order to establish a dial-up connection into the internet.

2. How to configure modem connection in my ubuntu linux ?
It depends. What is your modem? Make & Model? Be sure to check in this site first and ascertain if your modem is Linux supported. Be cautioned of the fact that there are many issues of modems (winmodems) under gnu/linux.

I you have adsl line you indeed need a modem or modem router
This modem router do have his own IP address .
If you enter this IP address in a web browser , you can configure you,re modem as ADMIN or User
But you also may need a ethernet card in you're computer to connect to you're modem router.
Or do you have a dial up line
Than you need a dial up modem.
WHat I dont know is, how to config this connection in my ubuntu laptop ?
If you boot Ubuntu with DSL line On the system should synse and automagically configure the router. Or, if you know the username and password from the ISP then use the network manager to configure it accordingly.
If modem is required here: the only problem is if your modem is not linux supported.

I use IBM R61E machine and it has built in modem on the motherboard.
Again the question: What is your modem. (we cannot help you unless you help us understand the problem).
