AC97 sound problems in Edgy
Hi,
I recently tried to install the Realtek drivers for my onboard nForce4 AC97 drivers and my sound stopped working. I've tried everything in here to no avail (I posted there but I've had no reply so I thought I'd post here too). lspci -v shows the sound card as being detected, but aplay -l says "aplay: device_list:222: no soundcards found..." and if I do a modprobe snd-intel8x0 it just hangs (once it came up with an error, but only once). Interestingly, it works fine if I boot into 2.6.17.10 (I'm now using 2.6.17.11), but I'm afraid I have no idea what that means! Can anyone help?! |
It sounds like there is something subtle going on when you move from 2.6.17.10 to 2.6.17.11
Maybe some drivers in 2.6.17.11 are being loaded and causing conflicts with the right driver, or else the right driver is not configured into that particular build of 2.6.17.11 that you are now using. Is there some other reason why you need to use 2.6.17.11? If not, perhaps the simplest solution is to stick with 2.6.17.10. -mark |
I should probably make it clear that sound was working in ..11, but it stopped working after I tried to install the Realtek drivers. Now you come to mention it, I don't think there was a reason why I was using 11. Looks like I'll just stay on 10 for now then!

Sounds like maybe the other sound drivers in 11 were conflicting with the Realtek driver, but for some reason the same thing was not happening in 10. You could try figure out why by looking at how the kernels are configured, but could keep your life simple and just stick with 10 for now.
