a few questions from a slackware user

1) does ubuntu come with hotplug?

2) i've got a realplayer installed in /home/mques/RealPlayer, in slackware to start realplayer from the RealPlayer directory as a normal users you just have to type 'realplay' but in Ubuntu you've got to type './realplay' because of this firefox fails to start realplay player when playing a *.ram file. How would i go about rectifying this? and in general for binaries which are'nt in /bin and /usr/bin.

3) in ubuntu where would i find the following rc scripts rc.hotplug, rc.firewall and rc.local? in slack they used to be in /etc/rc.d?

thats it, thanks in advance.

1) I don't know what's hotplug.

2) How did you install it?
Add extra repos and type:
Code:
sudo apt-get install realplay
To run it (GNOME): Applications menu > Sound & Video > RealPlayer 10

3) I only found: /etc/rc.local

For Firefox to automagically play RealPlayer files, you need to have
  • nphelix.so in firefox/plugins
  • nphelix.xpt in firefox/components
These are copied from the RealPlayer/mozilla directory.

You must do this as the user that installed Firefox (probably root) and Firefox must be started once by that user after copying these files (see http://getfirefox.com/releases for the details).

It would be far, far better if RealPlayer were installed in /usr/local rather than your home directory. In that case, you would add /usr/local/RealPlayer to the PATH environment variable in /etc/profile; if not that, make sure that /home/mques/RealPlayer is on your local PATH environment (see the README in the RealPlayer directory).

thanks for your replies.

realplayer was downloaded from the helixcommunity website. So I'll have to copy nphelix.so and nphelix.xpt as said above.

is there a way in general to get apps not installed in /bin /usr/bin and /usr/local/bin to work in their own directory without having to type './program' but just 'program'.

You should install it from the repository, much easier.

Add the directory to your $PATH variale. Add something like this to ~/.bashrc
Code:
PATH=/path/to/program/dir:$PATH
