3G cellular modems good in Ubuntu, not Kubuntu

Since 7.04 cellular modems have worked for me in both Ubuntu & Kubuntu. That was till first update of Kubuntu 8.1 when KDE version of Ubuntu stopped letting Networkmanager work. Latest version has made kppp not work.
Gnome version of Ubuntu still just needs a few clicks to connect to ATT or Alltel or Verizon.

How can I troubleshoot KDE networkmanager?
