12.04 LTS - no "Applications" icon in Launcher

I've just installed 12.04 LTS on a new drive, and I'm not impressed!

There is no "Applications" icon in the Launcher. How do I access more applications?

The first time I installed, it installed grub on a USB drive without asking where I wanted it. Re-install with drive removed.

Where is the update manager? Probably in the hidden applications. The Software Manager does not appear to have an option for selecting updates. I started a second VT and am updating from the command line.

I was expecting something a bit more usable.

What happens when you click the Ubuntu icon in the extreme upper left. You should see various application options there.

I get several large icons for recently used things, and several small, unlabeled icons at the bottom. I started clicking (not one of my favorite pastimes) to see what happens and found the second from left icon was what I was looking for. It would be nice if they had used the same icon as before. I'm not sure what the current icon represents. It is certainly not intuitive.

Thanks for pointing me in the right direction.
